Recalling Health to the Body Essentials

“At whatever time highly-skilled physicians shall have developed the healing of illnesses by means of foods … it is certain that the incidence of chronic and diversified illnesses will abate, and the general health of all mankind will be much improved.”

'Abdu'l-Baha, The Master  (1844-1921)

Fresh Air and Oxygen: Many atomic elements make up the body. Oxygen (O2) is a most essential element. That is why we must have plenty of fresh air. Two things about O2: make sure there is a way to have fresh air in your room while you sleep. This can be done by opening your window, where feasible. And, know that when food is cooked, its oxygen is lost. Enzymes are destroyed at 130o F, and most of the vital force needed for nourishment is dissipated. So eating raw foods increases the amount of accessible oxygen available to the body.

Water … Water … Everywhere: Drink plenty of water. My preference is the distilled kind. One ounce for each pound of body weight per day. There is debate over which is better, distilled water or natural spring water. At any rate, avoid drinking water straight from the tap if at all possible. And if you absolutely must drink from the faucet, let the water run for a few seconds before filling up your glass. Many years ago when I worked briefly selling reverse-osmosis water purification systems, one of the ways we would use to show people how impure their faucet water was, was to always test the first sample of the water that came out of the faucet—without letting it run a few seconds—this was because that water contained the most contaminants, including excess debris coming from the metal pipes which the water was pumped through.

Note: some people say they do not like the taste of distilled water, and to this I say, “You just haven’t found the right brand yet”. Taste will vary from grocery store to grocery store, and these days, some chains no longer carry distilled water. As of this writing, Wal-Mart carried good tasting distilled water in most southern states. Try the one that says “for babies” if distilled water is not available. It should read “steam distilled” or something similar. I also found that the problem of bad-tasting distilled water is more prominent in the southern states than in places out West, like California.

Natural Nutrition: Eat as much live raw foods as you can, preferably organic fruits and vegetables. The ideal food for your body is raw, uncooked and unprocessed. Nutrition is so essential to good bodily health that we include our natural science rules for good nutrition in Appendix A. Please take more than just a few minutes to review these rules, as they hold many of the mandatory keys to gaining optimal health nutritionally.

In addition to the rules in the natural science Guide, here are some natural nutrition tips I have found particularly useful:

·         Add raw vegetable salads to your diet with a raw spinach base if you have a tendency to constipation (or even if you do not). Spinach is excellent to help keep you regular. Also, in the juicing world, using a combination of pear and apple can initiate the peristaltic action necessary for proper elimination to take place. Of course with the recent spinach contamination scare, many people are reluctant to heed this advice. In fact as I write this, in the States, spinach has been off the grocery store shelves for weeks now, and I really miss it. So when it comes back, add it to your diet for more consistent, regular elimination.

·         Do not drink anything after you have retired to bed

·         Keep your meals as simple as possible, especially if you are ill or experiencing any type of dis-ease in your body. Try not to combine more than five food ingredients at a time. For example, a bowl of brown rice with salt, butter or olive oil, plus a cup of tea and honey would be five ingredients.

·         Eat melons alone or leave them alone. Do not combine melons with any other food, and wait at least 15 minutes for digestion to occur before eating other types of foods.

·         Add garlic to your diet, and onions (either cooked or raw). Juicing garlic in a vegetarian juice recipe is best when you are under the weather with a cold or flu, but adding it to cooked foods or soups also has benefits. Try using Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract pills when you are fighting off infections and viruses (available online or at your local Wal-Mart store). This natural remedy should decrease your recovery time during the flu and cold seasons, and actually fights the cause of your symptoms, instead of just masking them like most OTC meds do. Learn more about the Garlic Herb super food here at http://natural-nutrition.recallinghealth.com/Garlic-Herb-Superfood.html.

·         Black Tea, Green Tea and other Herbal Teas are an excellent alternative to caffinated drinks like coffee and carbonated drinks like soda pop, but be careful that you do not add refined white sugar to sweeten these drinks. In fact, you should work to cut down the amount of sugar or honey you add to these drinks as much as possible. If you are wondering why I included black tea in the list, check out some of the benefits of black tea here.
